The Micra is a five-door hatchback that is easy to see out of, simple to park and comfortable on a longer run. Running costs are low, insurance groups are sensible for new drivers, and the boot is a useful size for a small car. Higher trims come with a touchscreen, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and safety kit like lane departure warning and automatic emergency braking.
Engines and versions to look for
Nearly all used Micras have a 1.0 petrol engine. The turbocharged version is the one to look for, as it is noticeably quicker and just as economical. Most are manual, but an automatic was offered and suits anyone who mainly drives in town. Trim names run Visia, Acenta, N-Sport and Tekna, with N-Sport adding a sportier look and Tekna the most kit.
Which version should I buy?
Acenta is the sensible middle ground, with the touchscreen and cruise control most people want. If you like a bit of style, N-Sport looks the part without costing much more. Nissan launched a new, all-electric Micra in 2025, so the petrol cars on this page are the 2017 to 2023 shape.
Is the Nissan Micra a good first car?
Yes, it is one of the better small cars for a new driver. Insurance groups are low, the 1.0 engine is cheap to fuel and tax, and the Micra is easy to park and see out of. Most versions come with automatic emergency braking, which helps with insurance too. If you can stretch to a turbocharged 1.0, it is much easier to keep up with traffic on faster roads.

If most of your driving is around town or you simply prefer not to change gear, it is a sensible choice. If you do a lot of fast A-road or motorway driving, the manual feels livelier.
