Home charging is what makes electric car ownership genuinely cheap. Public rapid charging at 60–80p per kWh costs roughly the same per mile as running a petrol car. Charging at home on an overnight EV tariff at 7p per kWh costs around 2–3 pence per mile. That is the difference between an EV that saves you money and one that does not.

This guide covers everything you need to know about charging an electric car at home in the UK in 2026 — the difference between a 3-pin plug and a proper wallbox, what installation actually costs, who can still claim a government grant, how overnight tariffs work, and what to look for when choosing a smart charger.

3-pin plug vs wallbox: the practical difference

Every electric car comes with a granny cable — a charging lead that plugs into a standard 3-pin domestic socket. It works, and it is a genuinely useful backup, but it is not a realistic primary charging method for most people.

A standard UK domestic socket delivers around 2.3kW. A dedicated home wallbox delivers 7.4kW on a standard single-phase supply. That difference in power translates directly into charging time.

On a 3-pin plug, a 60kWh battery takes roughly 24–28 hours to charge from empty to full. On a 7.4kW wallbox, the same battery takes around 8–9 hours — comfortably an overnight charge. For a typical daily top-up of 30–40 miles of range, the 3-pin takes about 4 hours and the wallbox about an hour.

There is also a safety dimension. Domestic sockets and household wiring were not designed for drawing maximum current continuously for many hours at a time. Granny cables limit current to around 10A for this reason, and most manufacturers explicitly describe them as occasional-use devices rather than daily charging solutions. If you do use one regularly, plug directly into a wall socket rather than an extension lead, and have the socket checked by an electrician.

The critical practical point is tariff access. The cheapest EV electricity tariffs — the ones that make home charging genuinely cheap — typically require a smart charger that can be scheduled or controlled remotely. A granny cable cannot do that, so you end up paying your standard day rate rather than the off-peak rate. That alone usually justifies the wallbox.

What a home charger installation costs in 2026

A typical home wallbox installation in the UK in 2026 costs between £800 and £1,200 all in, including the unit and standard installation. Prices vary by brand, whether you want a tethered cable or an untethered socket, and how complex the installation is.

Standard installation typically covers up to around 10 metres of cable run from your consumer unit to the charger position, fitting the required protective devices, and testing and certification. Most installations fall within this scope.

Additional costs arise where the run is longer than standard, where your consumer unit needs upgrading to accommodate the new circuit, where the charger needs to be mounted on a wall with difficult access, or where a cable needs to be routed under a driveway. Discuss these possibilities with your installer at survey stage rather than discovering them on the day.

Most reputable installers now conduct a remote survey using photographs of your consumer unit, meter position, and proposed charger location, which flags most complications before an engineer is dispatched.

The OZEV grant in 2026: who can still claim

Government support for home charging has narrowed significantly since the early days of EV adoption, and the rules are widely misunderstood.

The original Electric Vehicle Homecharge Scheme, which gave every EV-owning homeowner a grant toward a charger, closed to standard homeowners in March 2022. If you own and live in a house or bungalow with a private driveway, you are not eligible for a home charging grant and have not been since then.

The current EV Chargepoint Grant is targeted at people who were previously excluded. From 1 April 2026, the maximum grant rose from £350 to £500 per socket, covering 75% of the combined cost of the chargepoint and its installation. The scheme has been confirmed to run until 31 March 2027.

You may be eligible if you fall into one of these groups: you rent your home and have private off-street parking that is yours under the terms of your tenancy; you own and live in a flat with allocated or private parking; you are a residential landlord installing chargers at rental properties (up to 200 sockets per year); or you have only on-street parking and are installing an approved cross-pavement charging solution.

Two practical conditions catch people out. First, if you rent or live in a leasehold flat, you need written permission from your landlord and, where applicable, the freeholder or managing agent — a verbal agreement will not satisfy OZEV. Second, the grant cannot be claimed retrospectively and cannot be claimed on a self-installed unit. It must be applied for by an OZEV-authorised installer, who deducts it from your final invoice.

If you are a homeowner with a driveway and therefore not eligible, a charger is still very much worth having — the running cost savings pay for the installation many times over across a few years of ownership.

The economics: home charging vs public charging

The running cost difference between charging at home and charging publicly is the single most important number in EV ownership, and it is much larger than most people realise.

A typical EV covers around 3.5 miles per kWh in mixed conditions. That means:

On a dedicated EV overnight tariff at around 7p/kWh, charging costs approximately 2 pence per mile. Covering 10,000 miles a year costs roughly £200.

On a standard home tariff at around 27p/kWh, charging costs approximately 7.7 pence per mile. The same 10,000 miles costs roughly £770.

On public rapid charging at around 60–80p/kWh, charging costs approximately 17–23 pence per mile. Covering 10,000 miles this way costs roughly £1,700–£2,300.

For comparison, petrol at around 144p per litre in a car returning 45 mpg costs approximately 14 pence per mile — roughly £1,450 for 10,000 miles.

The conclusion is clear. An EV charged at home on an off-peak tariff is dramatically cheaper to run than a petrol car. An EV charged exclusively on public rapid chargers costs more per mile than petrol. Home charging is not a nice-to-have for EV economics — it is the whole basis of them.

This also means that the honest answer to “should I buy an EV?” depends heavily on whether you can charge at home. If you have off-street parking and can install a wallbox, the financial case is strong. If you rely entirely on public charging, the case is much weaker and a hybrid or efficient petrol car may serve you better.

EV electricity tariffs: how off-peak charging works

The cheap rates that make home charging so economical come from EV-specific tariffs offered by most major UK energy suppliers. These give you a very low rate during a defined overnight window — typically somewhere between 11pm and 6am — in exchange for a slightly higher rate during the day.

Off-peak EV rates in 2026 generally sit between 6p and 10p per kWh, compared to a standard rate of around 27p. To benefit, you need a smart meter and a charger that can be scheduled to run only during the cheap window.

Most smart chargers handle this through their own app, and many can also integrate directly with your energy supplier so that charging is controlled automatically based on your tariff. Some suppliers offer tariffs where the supplier itself manages when your car charges, optimising for the cheapest available half-hourly rate.

A practical point worth knowing: because the off-peak window is typically around seven hours and a 7.4kW charger delivers roughly 7kWh per hour, you can add around 50kWh in a single overnight window — more than enough to fully charge most EVs from a typical daily state of charge.

What to look for in a smart charger

All new home chargepoints sold in the UK must comply with the Electric Vehicle (Smart Charge Points) Regulations 2021, which mandate smart functionality, default off-peak charging schedules, and security requirements. That means any compliant charger will have the basics. The differences are in how well they are implemented.

Tethered or untethered. A tethered charger has a permanently attached cable, typically 5–8 metres. It is more convenient day to day — you simply unhook and plug in. An untethered unit has a socket and you use your own cable, which is tidier when not in use and more flexible if you change to a car with a different connector. Most UK buyers choose tethered for convenience.

Scheduling and app quality. The app is how you will interact with the charger daily. Look for reliable scheduling, clear energy usage reporting, and the ability to override a schedule easily when you need an immediate charge.

Tariff integration. Chargers that connect directly to your energy supplier’s systems can optimise charging automatically against half-hourly pricing. This is more sophisticated than simple time-based scheduling and can save meaningfully more.

Solar compatibility. If you have solar panels now or might add them, look for a charger that supports solar matching — charging the car using surplus generation rather than exporting it. This effectively gives you free miles.

Load balancing. Where your home’s electrical supply is limited, a charger with load balancing will reduce its draw when other high-demand appliances are running, preventing the main fuse from tripping.

Over-the-air updates. Chargers that update themselves over Wi-Fi gain new features and security patches without an engineer visit, which matters over a device you will keep for a decade.

Warranty and support. Warranties range from three to five years, with some subscription products offering cover for the life of the contract. Check what the warranty actually covers and how quickly faults are attended.

Practical tips for home charging

A few habits make home charging easier and better for your battery over the long run.

Charge to 80% for daily use. Most manufacturers recommend limiting daily charging to around 80% on nickel-manganese-cobalt batteries, reserving 100% charges for longer journeys. Lithium iron phosphate batteries — used by BYD and on some Tesla Standard Range models — are the exception and can be routinely charged to 100%.

Top up rather than running down. EVs do not need to be fully discharged before recharging. Plugging in whenever convenient and letting the schedule handle the rest keeps the battery in its comfortable middle range.

Precondition in winter. Most EVs let you warm the cabin and battery while still plugged in, using mains electricity rather than battery charge. This preserves range on cold mornings and is one of the genuine advantages of home charging.

Mount the charger sensibly. Think about where your car’s charging port is and how you park. A charger on the wrong side of the driveway means stretching the cable across the car every time.

Check your consumer unit before ordering. Photograph your fuse board and meter and send them to your installer at survey stage. Most complications are identified this way before installation day.
