Stick to a model with a full service history and you should see well past 100,000 miles without major drama.

Seats are among the cheaper European brands to run. Servicing, parts and consumables typically cost less than equivalent Volkswagens or Audis, despite using much of the same hardware underneath. Independent VW Group specialists can service them too, which keeps bills sensible. Insurance groups are usually low to mid-range, especially on Ibiza and Leon. Bigger costs tend to come from the dual-clutch DSG gearbox or diesel particulate filters if neglected.

It depends on what you need. The Ibiza is the smart pick for a small, cheap-to-run city and commuter car. The Leon suits families wanting a Golf-style hatch for less money. The Ateca is the one to choose if you want a practical family SUV that drives sharply. Across all three, the 1.0 TSI and 1.5 TSI petrols in SE Technology or FR trim are the sweet spot for value, kit and running costs.

Seats hold their value reasonably well, though usually a touch less than the equivalent Volkswagen or Audi. That's actually good news for used buyers, because you get very similar engineering for noticeably less money. The Ateca SUV and sportier FR-trim Leons and Ibizas tend to depreciate the slowest. Higher-mileage diesels and entry-spec cars in plain colours drop fastest, so picking trim and spec carefully really pays off.

Start with a full service history and confirm the cambelt or chain has been done at the right interval. On TSI petrols, listen for a rattle at cold start, which can point to chain wear on older engines. On DSG automatics, check for jerky low-speed shifts and ask about gearbox oil changes. Inspect the touchscreen and electrics, and on diesels make sure the car has done plenty of motorway miles to keep the particulate filter healthy.
