BMWs are generally reliable when they've been properly looked after, and modern ones (2017 onwards) tend to do better than their reputation suggests. The key is service history. A BMW that's had regular oil changes and main dealer or specialist servicing will usually clock up high miles without drama. Skipped services and cheap fixes are where problems start, so always check the paperwork before buying.

BMWs cost a bit more to run than mainstream brands like Ford or Vauxhall, but less than you might fear if you use an independent BMW specialist instead of a main dealer. Expect to pay £200–£400 for a service, and budget for things like brakes, run-flat tyres and the occasional sensor. Diesel models need their oil changed on time, otherwise bills climb quickly.

For most UK buyers, the 3 Series is the sweet spot. It's comfortable on a long drive, cheap-ish to insure compared to bigger BMWs, and you get the proper rear-wheel-drive feel BMW is known for. If you want something smaller and cheaper to run, the 1 Series is great. If you need space and a higher driving position, the X3 is the pick of the SUVs.

BMWs hold their value well, particularly the 3 Series, X3 and X5. M Sport trim and popular colours like grey, black and white tend to depreciate slowest, while unusual colours and base trims drop faster. Diesel resale has softened a bit in cities with low-emission zones, but petrol and hybrid BMWs are still in strong demand on the used market.

Start with the service history — BMWs reward cars that have been serviced on time. Check for oil leaks around the engine, listen for rattles on a cold start, and make sure the run-flat tyres aren't cracked or mismatched. On a test drive, the gearbox should shift smoothly and the iDrive screen should respond properly. A clean MOT history with no advisories piling up is a good sign.
