Teslas are mechanically very reliable, with far fewer moving parts than a petrol or diesel car — no engine, gearbox, or exhaust to wear out. The motors and batteries routinely cover 200,000+ miles. The weak spots are 12V auxiliary batteries, door handles, and minor trim rattles rather than anything that strands you. Software updates arrive over the air, so cars often improve as they age.

Teslas are generally cheap to maintain compared with a premium petrol or diesel car. There are no oil changes, no spark plugs, no cambelts, and the regenerative braking means brake pads can last 80,000+ miles. Tyres and cabin filters are the main consumables. Tesla's service network is smaller than traditional brands, but a growing number of independent EV specialists now handle routine work too.

The Model 3 and Model Y are the two used Teslas worth focusing on. The Model 3 is the saloon — lower, sportier, and a bit cheaper to insure and run. The Model Y is the SUV version on the same platform — taller, with a much bigger boot and easier rear access for families. Pick the 3 for value and driving feel, the Y for space and practicality.

Used Teslas have come down in price sharply since 2023 as new prices were cut and more EVs hit the market, which is actually good news if you're buying used today. Going forward, residuals look more stable: the Supercharger network, strong demand for the Model Y, and over-the-air updates all help. Higher-spec Long Range and Performance versions tend to hold value best.

Check the battery health on a test drive — a full charge should show close to the original WLTP range, with around 90% retention being normal after a few years. Confirm Supercharger access is active on the account, check the software version is current, and see which driver-assist features are included — basic Autopilot, Enhanced Autopilot, or Full Self Driving. Inspect panel gaps, paintwork, and door handles too.
